PSG - how many rounds do you guys use?

Postby Mike Lee » Sun May 27, 2018 3:54 pm

Hi, as I'm just getting into practical shooting and soon to be going to my first intro session, I wanted to ask how many rounds on average do you guys use in a practise session and in a match with your shotguns?

Cheers

Most matches that you are likely to encounter will follow IPSC conventions, if not directly adhering to their rules. Without getting into detail, they designate match "levels" based on size (number of stages, targets, competitors) and other criteria.

To answer your question, a typical national-level match (Level 3) will have a minimum of 12 stages at an average of 12 to 14 rounds per stage giving a minimum round count of 150.

A typical club meeting will often be run as an informal match (Level 1) with say 6 to 8 stages and a minimum round count of 80 to 100. Just a practice session, to maybe practice particular drills will be similar and probably many more than this.

The bulk of rounds used will be birdshot on steel or breakable targets such as clays. 28 gram No. 7 or 8 shot size (a typical "clay" cartridge) are popular and all that you need in terms of power.

Bigger matches will have maybe a couple of stages using Buckshot typically "SG" (Small Game)in the UK ("00" USA) on steel, paper or card targets.

Solid slug stages are confined to the very few ranges that are cleared for that type of round such as Shield or Rossendale.

For your first introductory session just get yourself some 28 gram 7s or 8s as above. Eley First 7.5 are a good example. Most ranges these days will stipulate fibre wad only (as opposed to plastic) as the former decomposes and does not leave a livestock, wildlife or litter risk. Popular cartridge sizes are usually available in both fibre and plastic options. Don't worry about Buckshot and Slug at this stage.
